Lake Asale, also known as Lake Karum, is one of the most remarkable landscapes in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression. Located in the Afar Region, the lake is surrounded by vast salt flats that stretch across one of the hottest and lowest regions on Earth.

For generations, salt has been extracted from this area and transported toward the Ethiopian highlands. Traditional camel caravans carrying blocks of salt remain one of the most distinctive sights of the Danakil Depression.

Where Is Lake Asale?

Lake Asale is located in the northern Danakil Depression in Ethiopia’s Afar Region, near the Dallol area.

The surrounding landscape is dominated by salt flats, desert and geological formations created by the extreme environment of the Afar Depression.

Because of its remote location, Lake Asale is usually reached by 4WD vehicle as part of an organized Danakil expedition.

Lake Asale Salt Flats

The enormous salt flats surrounding Lake Asale are among the most recognizable landscapes of the Danakil Depression.

Large areas of the ground are covered by salt crust, creating an almost endless white landscape against the surrounding desert and mountains.

Depending on conditions, shallow water on parts of the salt flats can create reflections, particularly around sunset.

The combination of open desert, salt and changing light makes Lake Asale especially attractive for landscape photography.

Salt Mining in the Danakil Depression

Salt has traditionally been extracted from the Danakil Depression for generations.

Workers cut salt from the ground into blocks before preparing it for transportation.

The salt trade has historically connected the Afar lowlands with communities and markets in the Ethiopian highlands.

Visitors traveling through the area may have the opportunity to observe parts of this traditional salt-mining process.

Camel Caravans at Lake Asale

One of the most memorable sights around Lake Asale is the camel caravans traditionally used to transport salt.

Long lines of camels crossing the salt flats have become one of the iconic images of the Danakil Depression.

The number and location of caravans vary, so seeing a large caravan cannot be guaranteed on every visit. However, salt transportation remains an important part of the history and culture of the region.

Sunset at Lake Asale

Lake Asale is one of our favorite locations for sunset during a Danakil expedition.

As the temperature begins to fall, the changing light creates beautiful colors across the salt flats and surrounding desert.

When a thin layer of water is present, the surface can produce impressive reflections of the sky.

On our standard itinerary, we normally visit the Lake Asale area in the late afternoon before spending the night around Hamedela.

Lake Asale and Dallol

Lake Asale and Dallol are located in the same northern section of the Danakil Depression and are normally visited as part of the same expedition.

While Lake Asale is known for its vast salt flats, salt mining and camel caravans, Dallol is famous for its colorful hydrothermal formations and mineral-rich geothermal landscape.

Visiting both gives travelers two very different perspectives on the Danakil Depression.

Erta Ale offers a dark volcanic landscape shaped by basaltic lava and ongoing volcanic processes, while Lake Asale presents an open landscape dominated by salt and desert.

Best Time to Visit Lake Asale

The most comfortable time to explore the Danakil Depression is generally during the cooler months, particularly November through February.

The wider travel season can extend from approximately September through April, although temperatures can become considerably higher outside the coolest months.

Late afternoon is particularly attractive at Lake Asale because of the softer light and sunset views.
