Discover four of northern Ethiopia’s most remarkable destinations in one journey.

This 8-day Ethiopia tour combines the extraordinary landscapes of the Danakil Depression with the rock-hewn churches of Tigray, the ancient history of Axum and the UNESCO-listed churches of Lalibela.

The journey includes a 3-day Danakil Depression expedition followed by Tigray, Axum and Lalibela. The itinerary can also be customized according to your travel dates, domestic flights and interests.

8-Day Danakil, Tigray, Axum & Lalibela Itinerary

Day 1 – Semera – Lake Afdera – Erta Ale

Meet your guide and driver in Semera in the morning and begin the journey into the Danakil Depression.

Drive toward Lake Afdera, where we stop before continuing across the volcanic landscape toward Erta Ale.

After reaching the Erta Ale base camp, we prepare for the trek toward the crater area.

Erta Ale is one of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary geological destinations and the highlight of the first day in the Danakil.

Overnight: Camping at Erta Ale

Day 2 – Erta Ale – Hamedela – Lake Asale

After breakfast, leave the Erta Ale area and continue across the Danakil Depression toward Hamedela.

In the late afternoon, visit Lake Asale, one of the vast salt flats of the Danakil Depression.

Enjoy sunset over the salt flats and, when active, see the traditional camel caravans transporting blocks of salt across the desert.

Overnight: Camping at Hamedela

Day 3 – Dallol – Salt Mining – Mekele

After breakfast, drive toward Dallol.

Explore the colorful hydrothermal landscape, salt formations and other geological features that make this part of the Danakil Depression so unusual.

We also visit the traditional salt-mining area, where salt has been cut into blocks and transported by camel caravans for generations.

After the visit, drive to Mekele.

Overnight: Mekele

Day 4 – Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches

After breakfast, travel into the mountains of Tigray to explore some of Ethiopia’s remarkable rock-hewn churches.

For adventurous travelers, the day can include Abune Yemata Guh, one of the best-known churches in the Gheralta Mountains, together with another nearby church depending on available time.

If you prefer an easier experience, we can arrange alternative churches requiring less climbing.

Overnight: Hawzen or Gheralta

Day 5 – Tigray – Yeha – Axum

Continue north toward Axum.

Along the way, visit Yeha, one of Ethiopia’s important ancient archaeological sites.

Continue to Axum in the afternoon and check into your hotel.

Overnight: Axum

Day 6 – Axum

Spend the day exploring Axum, the former center of the ancient Aksumite Kingdom.

Visit the famous stelae field and other important archaeological and historical sites around the city.

Your local guide will introduce you to Axum’s history and its importance in Ethiopia’s ancient civilization and religious traditions.

Overnight: Axum

Day 7 – Fly to Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches

Transfer to Axum Airport for your flight to Lalibela.

After arrival, begin exploring Lalibela’s extraordinary rock-hewn churches.

Visit the main church complexes with a local guide and learn about their architecture, history and continuing importance to Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.

The visit includes the iconic Church of St. George, Bete Giyorgis.

Overnight: Lalibela

Day 8 – Lalibela – Addis Ababa

Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy additional time in Lalibela before transferring to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa.

The tour ends upon arrival in Addis Ababa, or we can arrange an airport transfer, additional sightseeing or accommodation according to your onward travel plans.

Danakil Depression Tour

The first three days of this journey take you through the Danakil Depression.

Our Danakil expeditions use Toyota Land Cruisers and include experienced drivers, guides, camping equipment, meals, drinking water and the necessary local arrangements.

The Danakil section can be organized privately or as part of one of our small-group departures.

Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches

Tigray contains some of Ethiopia’s most spectacular rock-hewn churches, many of them built high into sandstone mountains and cliffs.

Abune Yemata Guh involves hiking, climbing and exposed sections and is not suitable for everyone.

Travelers who prefer an easier visit can choose churches such as Abraha We Atsbeha, Wukro Cherkos or other accessible churches depending on the route.

We provide the main camping equipment required for the Danakil expedition.

Accommodation

Hotel accommodation can be arranged according to your preferred level.

We generally offer comfortable locally owned hotels for our Standard option and higher-end accommodation where available for travelers choosing a Deluxe package.

During the Danakil Depression section, accommodation is camping because conventional hotels are not available along much of the route.

If you have additional days, we can extend the trip to include Gondar, the Simien Mountains or additional time in Lalibela and Tigray.
