The Danakil Depression is one of the most extreme landscapes on the planet — a geological wonder in northeastern Ethiopia known for its otherworldly terrain, colorful hot springs, sulfuric acid pools, and active volcanic lava lakes. It formed where three tectonic plates — the Somali, Arabian, and African — are slowly pulling apart at roughly 3cm per year. That constant stretching has thinned the Earth’s crust here, exposing the surface to the volcanic activity churning beneath it.

Danakil Depression Tour 3 Days Itinerary

Day 1: Semera or Mekele – Afdera – Erta Ale

Departure is after 8:00 am from your location in Semera or Mekele. After coffee and juice, we begin our journey through the dramatic landscapes of the Afar region toward Afdera, a small settlement located near Afdera Salt Lake. After lunch, we visit Afdera Salt Lake. Depending on local conditions and safety considerations, you may have the opportunity to swim or float in the highly saline water. We then continue deeper into the Danakil region toward the Erta Ale Base Camp.

Erta Ale is one of Ethiopia’s most famous volcanic destinations and is located in one of the most remote parts of the Danakil Depression. The journey toward the volcano takes you through dramatic volcanic and desert landscapes.

Day 2: Erta Ale – Hamedela – Lake Asale

After breakfast, we leave the Erta Ale area and continue our journey through the Danakil Depression toward Hamedela. Today’s drive takes us through some of the most remote and dramatic landscapes in Ethiopia. Along the way, you will experience the unique desert environment and vast open landscapes of the Afar region.

In the afternoon, we continue toward Lake Asale, one of the most spectacular salt landscapes in the Danakil Depression. Here, you can walk across the enormous white salt flats and photograph the extraordinary landscape. Depending on the season and local conditions, you may also see traditional camel caravans transporting salt across the desert. Sunset over the Lake Asale salt flats offers excellent photography opportunities.

Day 3: Dallol – Salt Flats – Mekele

Early in the morning, we begin exploring the extraordinary Dallol Geothermal Area. Dallol is famous for its colorful mineral formations, geothermal landscapes, salt formations, and otherworldly scenery. The area is one of the most unusual geological landscapes in Ethiopia.

During the day, we also visit traditional salt mining areas and explore the surrounding salt landscapes. Depending on local conditions, we may also see camel caravans transporting salt across the Danakil Depression.

After completing our exploration of Dallol and the surrounding salt flats, we begin our journey toward Mekele. We normally arrive in Mekele in the late afternoon, where the 3-Day Danakil Depression Tour concludes.
