4-Day Danakil Depression & Tigray Itinerary

Day 1: Semera – Lake Afdera – Erta Ale

Our guide and driver will meet you in Semera in the morning and begin the journey into the Danakil Depression.

Along the way, we stop around Lake Afdera before continuing through the volcanic desert landscape toward the Erta Ale base-camp area.

After reaching camp, we prepare to experience Erta Ale, one of Ethiopia’s most famous active volcanoes. Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale.

Day 2: Erta Ale – Hamedela – Lake Asale

After returning from Erta Ale, we continue across the Danakil Depression toward Hamedela.

Later in the afternoon, visit Lake Asale, famous for its vast salt flats and traditional camel caravans. The salt flats provide spectacular scenery, particularly around sunset. Overnight: Camping at Hamedela.

Day 3: Dallol – Salt Flats – Mekele

After breakfast, travel to Dallol and explore one of the Danakil Depression’s most unusual geological landscapes.

Visit colorful mineral formations, salt deposits and the surrounding salt flats. You may also see traditional salt workers and camel caravans operating in the area.

After exploring Dallol, we drive to Mekele for an overnight hotel stay. Overnight: Hotel in Mekele.

Day 4: Mekele – Tigray Mountains – Mekele

After breakfast, drive from Mekele into the Tigray Mountains for a day exploring the region’s spectacular landscapes and historic rock-hewn churches.

Depending on the agreed itinerary and local conditions, the day can include Abune Yemata Guh and Mariam Korkor.

After the excursion, return to Mekele, where your 4-day Danakil and Tigray journey ends.

The itinerary may be adjusted according to weather, road conditions, local regulations, security considerations and access conditions.

What to Pack for Danakil & Tigray

Bring lightweight clothing suitable for the heat, comfortable trekking shoes, sandals, sunscreen, a hat, headlamp or torch and a power bank.

For the Tigray Mountains, good walking or trekking shoes are particularly important. Travelers planning to climb Abune Yemata Guh should also be comfortable with heights and physically prepared for the climb.
