Things to do in Lalibela in 2 days

When King Lalibela decided to recreate Jerusalem in Ethiopia in the 12th century, he took a unique approach. Instead of building towering churches reaching for the heavens like others, Lalibela meticulously carved his churches from the volcanic rock beneath his feet. Perhaps he was eager for God’s presence to grace his creations. And it wasn’t just one church that Lalibela carved. Today, there are 11 awe-inspiring churches waiting to be discovered. Spread across a roughly triangular 15-hectare site on both sides of a rock-cut stream known locally as the Jordan River, these remarkable rock-hewn churches of Lalibela can be found in two clusters. Among them stands the magnificent Bet Giyorgis, standing alone about 300 meters away from its counterparts.
